Everything you want to know about Quito
Parque La Carolina

Quito is the capital of Ecuador. The city is located just 20 kilometers from the equator, spread on mount Pichincha, an active volcano, and surrounded by fourteen (partly) active volcanoes.

Quito stands at an altitude of 2.850 meters above sea level, so once you arrive, you may experience some shortness of breath and feel dizzy. Your body may need some time to adjust to the heights.

With 3,5 million inhabitants, Quito is the second biggest city in Ecuador. The town lies between volcanoes and runs from north to south. The city is 70 km long but only four (!) km wide.

Many tourists start their journey through Ecuador in Quito. Mariscal Sucre International Airport is located 18 kilometers (11 miles) east of Quito and is the busiest airport in Ecuador.

Many ho(s)tels offer transportation from the airport to their location. If you have nothing arranged yet you can take a taxi, uber or bus to Quito. A taxi should cost you around 30 dollars (depending on which part of Quito you are staying in).

Some history about Quito

The city is rich in culture and preserved many of its historic buildings.

Quito has the highest cultural city center in South America, and for that reason, it is on the world heritage of UNESCO. In the old town, you will find different types of architecture, and a lot is within walking distance. So you can stroll around and see everything within a day here.

Sites you should visit if you are in the old town:

  • Basilica del Voto Nacional. This gothic church is the largest in South America and for a few dollars you can climb it’s tower and have a view over Quito.
  • Calle La Ronda. This colourful street is famous for its small colonial buildings where you can find many places to eat.
  • Change of Guards. If you are visiting Quito on a Monday go to Plaza Grande. Every Monday at 11 am there is a ceromony of the guards and it is quite an impressive show. Very fun to watch!
Calle La Ronda

I highly recommend joining a free walking tour, as it is a fun way to learn more about the architecture and some history of the city from a local guide. It is also much cheaper than a paid tour and a great way to meet other travelers.

Weather in Quito

When you are in Quito, you will notice that the weather changes a lot during the day. Don’t be surprised to see all weather conditions in one day: sun, clouds, rain, and hail.

In the mornings it is often very sunny. If you go outside, it is essential to use sunscreen. Do not be fooled by some clouds. As the city is on the equator, the UV radiation is high, and you will easily sunburn.

In the afternoon, it mostly gets cloudy, and it may rain. On average, the temperature is between 15-20°C (59-68°F).

The best time to visit Quito is from June to September during the dry season. There are fewer rainfalls during these months, and it is warmer. The wettest month is April.

It is not unwise to carry a thin rain jacket or a small umbrella with you. Fortunately, it often rains for a short time, after which the sun comes out again.

How many days should I stay in Quito?

Quito is the perfect city to start your (backpack) journey in Ecuador. To visit all the things the city has to offer, two or three days should be sufficient. However, from Quito, you can take many day trips such as mountain biking at Volcan Cotopaxi, a visit to the Quilotoa crater, or the Otovalo market. Depending on how long you visit Ecuador, you can stay in Quito and take those trips from the capital or travel to cities closer to these attractions. It all depends on your itinerary!

Where to stay in Quito?

It is difficult to determine which area is good to stay in an unfamiliar city. The following areas are recommended:

  • La Mariscal is a famous area for its nightlife. If you like to go out it is a good neighborhood to stay in.
  • La Carolina is the center of the north part of Quito. Here you can find one of the largest parks, where you can walk around and do exercises. Closeby you can also find the Olympic stadium.
  • Historic center is where you will find all beautiful churches and museums within walking distance.
  • La Floresta is a popular neighborhood with street art and many restaurants and local markets.

Is Quito a safe city?

Yes! Of course, some parts are better to avoid. For example, do not use the stairs to El Panecillo, or walking around alone at night is not recommended either.

As long as you use common sense, Quito is pretty safe. Quito was a dangerous city in the past, but it has changed a lot. The government and the municipal are working hard to keep it secure. In the old town, you can find “tourist” police who speak English. You can recognize them with a special badge on their shoulder.

What makes Quito a great destination?

Unquestionably Quito is an excellent destination to enjoy yourself. The capital, surrounded by the mountains Cotopaxi, Pichincha, and Cayambe has much to offer. You can find impressive panoramic views from rooftops, the Basilica, or el Panecillo of the city and visit many historical sites.

A city that welcomes tourists and residents and combines history with modernity.
