Traveling by Bus in Ecuador? Here Are 7 Tips!

Traveling by bus is super well organized in Ecuador. Ecuador is relatively small compared to its fellow South-American countries, so your travel distances are much shorter. Besides that, the buses in Ecuador are very comfortable and depart regularly. There is usually WiFI, a movie playing, and air conditioning. The bus terminals are easy to find and clearly indicate when to take which bus. In addition, the busses generally run punctually. Before you board the bus, your name and tickets are checked by the bus company’s driver or employee. Remember that Ecuador has many mountains, so you make many turns and drive along steep precipices during your travel. Also, the roads are not always good due to landslides after heavy rainfall, so it may get bumpy sometimes. In this article I have listed seven tips for you that you should know before boarding a bus.

1. Check the Bus Connections

The first thing to consider while traveling by bus in Ecuador is to determine which route you are taking and if there is a good bus connection between these places. You can get anywhere, but arriving at your next destination as quickly as possible is much nicer than making many transfers. A bus ride from Quito to Guayaquil takes around 10 hours and costs 12 dollars. A trip from Quito to Baños will cost about $5 and take four and a half hours. You can find more information about bus connections, bus terminals, prices, and times here or here.

2. Research the Bus Company

Many bus companies operate in Ecuador, and some are more reliable than others. Do some research beforehand to find out which companies have good safety records. Here are a few options:

  • CIFA: This is one of Ecuador’s largest and most popular bus companies, offering a wide range of routes throughout the country. Their buses are known for being modern, comfortable, and safe.
  • Panamericana is another well-known bus company in Ecuador. Panamericana offers a variety of routes, including long-distance journeys. They also have a good reputation for safety and comfort.
  • Reina del Camino: This company offers routes primarily between Quito and the northern coast of Ecuador, including popular destinations like Esmeraldas and Atacames. Their buses are modern and comfortable.
  • Trans Esmeraldas: If you’re traveling to or from Esmeraldas, Trans Esmeraldas is a reliable option. Their buses are well-maintained, and the company has a good safety record.
  • Cooperativa Loja: This bus company offers routes primarily in southern Ecuador, including popular destinations like Loja, Cuenca, and Vilcabamba. Their buses are comfortable, and their drivers are known for being cautious and responsible.

It’s important to note that while these companies have good reputations for safety and reliability, it’s still a good idea to exercise caution when traveling by bus in Ecuador.

3. Book Your Tickets in Advance

If you travel by bus during peak season or on popular routes, booking your tickets in advance is a good idea to ensure you get a seat on the bus. There are several ways to book a bus ticket in advance. You can book the ticket online. Many bus companies have websites where you can book tickets. Some popular bus companies with online booking options include CIFA, Panamericana, and Reina del Camino. Visit the website of the bus company you want to use, choose your route, select your departure and arrival dates and times, and pay for your ticket using a credit or debit card. Another option is to buy the ticket in advance at the bus terminal. If you prefer to book your ticket in person, you can visit the bus terminal in the city where you’ll be departing from. Most bus terminals have ticket offices where you can purchase tickets directly from the bus company.

Regardless of how you choose to book your bus ticket, it’s a good idea to book in advance, as this can help ensure that you get a seat on the bus you want and can avoid any last-minute travel headaches.

4. Valuables in Your Hand Luggage

This sounds pretty obvious, but it may temporarily slip your mind. Please put all your valuables in your carry-on luggage and take them on the bus with you. In doing so, ensure you always keep your valuables with you. Don’t put your carry-on luggage on the floor or overhead compartment. This is the most common place where items such as cameras or laptops are stolen. The rest of your luggage will go in the luggage compartment, and once you are on the bus, you cannot always keep an eye on it. Then, should something happen (which rarely does), at least you still have your valuables, like your passport and the photos from your trip.

5. Bring Some Warm Clothes On the Bus

The air conditioning is a welcoming breeze after being in the heat outside. In the beginning, it is nice, but little by little, it will feel colder until it is uncomfortable. The temperature can also drop significantly at night or drive through the mountains. So take a light sweater and maybe some socks in your hand luggage to be comfy the whole bus ride.

6. Pack Some Snacks and Water

Bus rides in Ecuador can be long, and bringing some snacks and water with you is a good idea. Along the road, you will have some opportunity to buy something, but (especially if it is a long ride) it is always better to be prepared.

7. Use the Bathroom Before Boarding

Lastly, some buses may not have a bathroom on board, so using the restroom before getting on the bus is a good idea.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Many locals are friendly and willing to assist if you are unsure or need help at the bus station. Traveling by bus in Ecuador is entirely safe and very comfortable as long as you use common sense and keep your valuables close to you!
